The rainy, miserable weather that has marked the start of the season continued in earnest at Surrey Golf Club this week, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown. Despite the relentless downpour, fifteen brave souls gathered at the first tee, their spirits buoyed by the occasional teasing pockets of sun. Little did they know, the golf gods had no intention of showing mercy.
From the moment the first ball soared into the stormy sky, the rain intensified, becoming a constant companion throughout the entire round. Each golfer faced not just the usual challenges of the course but the added trials of slippery grips and waterlogged fairways. Yet, the spirit of competition burned bright amid the gloom.
As the round progressed, the weather took its toll. Only eleven stalwart players managed to fight through the punishing conditions and finish the round. Among these intrepid golfers, Howard Smith emerged victorious in the Player’s Division, completing the round of the day with a net 70 that stood unmatched.
The Master’s Division witnessed a gripping duel between Matt Veysey and Corey Garrett. In his first round of the year, Veysey battled fiercely against Garrett, both players refusing to yield even as they slogged through the soaked terrain. Their contest extended beyond the 18th hole, culminating in a dramatic tie-break that saw both carding net 71s. In the end, Garrett claimed victory by the slimmest of margins.
This marked the sixth event of the year, a season thus far characterized by uncooperative weather. With summer seemingly just around the corner, the players and spectators alike hold onto hope for clearer skies and drier greens in the tournaments to come. Until then, the courage and tenacity displayed at Surrey Golf Club will be remembered as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the game.
